a celebration: will you be my valentine? daytime edition.

Alright, so its around the corner. And by it, I mean Valentine's Day. Whether you have special date or plans with your closest friends, take this opportunity to play with your makeup! This look is a fresh, natural and flirty look. I created this with a daytime date in mind. Every man wants a woman who looks like they are glowing from with-in, without looking overdone. If you have the Lorac Unzipped palette (which I used) or the new Naked 3 palette, you will be set up perfectly to achieve this rose gold look. However, this can still be used with other products in your own collection! Make it work girl!

the eyes:

-As always, start with priming your eyelids to make sure your eyeshadow lasts all day. (Lorac Behind the Scenes Eye Primer)
-Start by packing a light shimmery rose color all over the lid. (Lorac #Unreal)
-Then apply a slightly deeper shimmery rose shadow on the outer two thirds of the lid. (Lorac #Unbelieveable)
-Blend a matte rose colored shadow through your crease with a fluffy brush to soften the edges of the shimmery shadows and provide a transition color to the brow bone. (Lorac #Unconditional)
-To deepen and further accentuate the crease, blend a deep plum color through the socket concentrating directly in the crease. (Lorac #Unbridled)
-Next, highlight the inner tear duct with a shimmery pale pink shadow. (Lorac #Undercover)
-Then, accentuate the brow bone by packing on a matte shadow a few shades lighter than your skin tone directly under the brow. (NYX Nude Matte Shadow #I Have A Headache)
-Tightline the upper lashes with a dark brown liner pencil, and line the water line. (Jordana 12hr Made to Last Liquid Eyeliner Pencil #Espresso Last)
-With a flat definer brush, tightly line the lower lash line with the darker shimmery rose shadow. (Lorac #Unbelievable)
-Blend that out slightly using the matte rose shadow. (Lorac #Unconditional)
-Don't forget to coat your lashes with your favorite mascara. (Lorac Pro Mascara)
-Finish the look off by applying really flirty lashes... these are my favorites! (Ardel Naturals #Scanties)

a worldly perspective: the modern geisha.

Today marks the beginning of a new series here on ALIZARIN called A Worldly Perspective. In this series I will examine looks from all over the globe and show you how to make them wearable for the everyday makeup lover. Today's look is inspired by traditional Japanese Geisha Makeup. I absolutely adore Geisha makeup because it is always very graphic and precise. Not to mention, red and black are my two favorite colors. I really hope that you will take some time to browse the internet and discover all the inspiring looks that stem from the Geisha tradition. Since this is not the history channel, I am skipping over that. But, I encourage you to do some digging yourself and learn a few interesting cultural facts behind the Geisha.

the eyes:

-First begin as always by priming your lid with an eye primer. (Lorac Behind the Scenes Eye Primer)
-Next, apply a white cream base to your lid, lower lash-line and under the brow bone. Also, line your water line with the cream base or white eyeliner. (NYX Jumbo Pencil #Milk)
-Now pack a satin or matte finish pale cream shadow all over your lid, stopping at the crease. (Urban Decay Eyeshadow #Venus)
-Blend that out with a matte shade almost exactly the same as your skin tone in the crease. (Urban Decay Shadow #W.O.S.)
-Then trace your outer V, into the outer 2/3 of you crease, and along the outer 2/3 of your lower lash line with a red liner. (NYX Lip Liner Pencil #Plush Red)
-Next fill in the outer V and along the lower lash line with a red cream base on a small detail brush. (Revlon Super Lustrious Lipstick #Really Red)
-After that pack on a red toned shadow over the red cream products. (Wet & Wild Color Icon Blush #Berry Shimmer)
-With no product on a blending brush, blend the edge between the cream shadow and red shadow on the lid. This should create a pink gradient effect in the middle of the lid.
-Make sure to blend out the white cream base under the brow bone completely. Then pack on a the same pale cream shadow used on the lid, on the brow bone. (Urban Decay Shadow #Venus)
-To give the lash line the strong graphic punch all Geisha looks are known for, apply a black gel liner with no wing. (Maybelline Eyestudio Gel Liner #Blackest Black)
-Finally, top everything off with a light coat of mascara. Do not over do the mascara. The liner is meant to be the statement in geisha makeup, not the lashes. (Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara)

the cheeks:

-It is important to keep the skin very pale and fresh with only a subtle flush. Skip out on all contouring and bronzer for this look.
-Apply a berry toned blush, focusing on the upper cheekbones instead of the apples. (Wet & Wild Color Icon Blush #Berry Shimmer)
-For an added glow to the skin, add your favorite highlighter to the high points of the cheeks. (MAC Mineralized Skin Finish #Lightscapade)

the lips:

-For a bleed proof pout, line the lips with a bright red lip liner. (NYX Lip Liner Pencil #Plush Red)
-Next, top off the lip liner with a vibrant matte red lipstick. (Revlon Super Lustrious Lipstick #Really Red)
-Lastly, clean up the edges of the lips with a skin tone concealer and a synthetic brush.

celebrity crush: inspired by Rihanna's 2014 NYE look

Today is the first installment of my celebrity crush series! Please leave any requests for celebrity inspired looks in the comment section or on my social media!! This was inspired by the look Rihanna wore to bring in the New Year. As soon as I saw it on my newsfeed I fell in love. It was simple, clean and so fresh in a sea full of dark, smokey and typical NYE looks. Sometimes you just need a bright pop of color to liven up your winter. As always, please try the look out with products already in you collection. Enjoy!

the eyes:

-As always, start by priming your eyes with your favorite eyeshadow primer or base. (Lorac Behind the Scenes Primer)
-Next, use a medium warm brown matte shadow in your crease as a transition shade. This will help the following shadows to blend easier. (Urban Decay #Buck)
-With a flat shadow brush, pack a bronze shadow or bronzer all over the lid. (Maybelline Dream Sun Bronzer)
-To highlight the center of the lid, pack a shimmery gold shadow only in the center. (Urban Decay #Half Baked)
-Using a smaller blending brush, blend a darker warm brown shadow directly in the crease for extra depth to the look. (Lorac #Sable)
-With a black kohl eyeliner line your upper lash line. (Jordana 12hr Made to Last Liquid Eyeliner #Black Point)
-Next with a detail brush, pack a black matte shadow along the eyeliner to set it. (Lorac #Black)
-Make sure to highlight your brow bone with a matte shadow a few shades lighter than your skin tone (NYX Nude Matte Shadow #IHaveAHeadache).
-To brighten your eyes, line your waterline with a nude waterproof liner. (Rimmel Scandaleyes Kohl Kajal #Nude)
-Don't forget to apply mascara! (Lancome Hypnose Star Mascara)
-Rihanna had very dramatic lashes on, but to make this a little more wearable for everyday I chose a light natural pair. (Ardell Naturalites #21)

the lips:
-Line your lips with a magenta lip liner. (NYX Lip Liner Pencil #Sand Pink)
-Apply a matching magenta lipstick. (Bite Beauty High Pigment Pencil #Amarone)

other products used:
-Korres Mattifying Primer
-Josie Maran Argan Matchmaker Serum Foundation #Fair/Light

a look: black diamond

Well hello there. I am back again today a look featuring a classic black smokey eye with a colorful twist. This look is so easy to achieve and perfect for a night out or party. I hope you all enjoy and as always please do try this look out with products already in your collection.

the eyes:

-Begin by prepping the lids with your primer of choice. (Lorac Behind the Scenes Eye Primer)
-Next take a black cream shadow or gel liner and pack this on the lid, stopping at the crease, using a flat synthetic brush. (Maybelline Eyestudio Gel Liner #Blackest Black)
-Using a flat shader brush, pack a glittery black shadow all over the cream base. The cream base ill give this shadow more depth and help the pigment adhere more evenly. (Prestige Longterm Relationship Eyeshadow #BlackMagic)
-Then sweep a coral color shadow through the crease using a fluffy blending brush. (KIKO Water Eyeshadow #218)
-Using a smaller blending brush place a dark eggplant or purple shadow directly into the crease. Be more precise with the color, being careful not to overtake the coral. (KIKO Water Eyeshadow #204)
-With a liquid or gel liner create a winged liner along the upper lashline. (Maybelline Eyestudio Gel Liner #BlackestBlack)
-Next, line your waterline with a nude waterproof eyeliner. This will help the eyes appear more open, and is a more subtle option than using a stark white. (Rimmel Scandaleyes Kohl Kajal #Nude)
-Using a flat definer brush, place the eggplant shadow closely to the outer 2/3 of the lower lashline. (KIKO Water Eyeshadow #204)
-Then with a pencil brush and the coral shadow, blend out the eggplant. You should be able to see the coral below the eggplant, as it will not be so close to the lash line. (KIKO Water Eyeshadow #218)
-After that, place a matte shadow a few shades lighter than your skintone along the browbone for a natural highlight. This will help the arch of your brows appear more lifted. (NYX Nude Matte Shadow #IHaveAHeadache)
-Go ahead and coat your lashes with your mascara of choice. (Lancome Hypnose Star Mascara #Noir Midnight & Toofaced Better Than Sex Mascara)
-Finish off the look by adding lashes of your choice. Feel free to skip this step if you prefer. (Ardell Naturalites #21)

the lips & cheeks:

-Since the eyes are pretty dramatic, I went for a very subtle nude lip and cheek combo.
-For the lips, first apply a browny-nude lipstick. (L'oreal Coloriche Lipstick #FairestNude)
-Then top your lips off with a more warm-toned nude gloss for some added healthy shine. (NARS Lipgloss #Chihuahua)
-Moving on to the cheeks, I contoured a the underneath of my cheekbones with a cool matte brown contour powder. (NYX Nude Matte Shadow #Tryst)
-Next, warm up your complexion around the perimeters of your face with your favorite bronzer. (Physician's Formula Bronze Booster #Light/Medium)
-Apply a bronze-plum colored blush to the cheeks, right above the contour. (Benefit Boxed Powder Blush #Dallas)
-Lastly top it off, by sweeping a subtle champagne highlight over the highest points of your cheeks. (MAC Mineralized Skin Finish #Lightscapade)

other products used:

-Rimmel Fix & Perfect Pro Primer #002
-Josie Maran Argan Matchmaker Serum Foundation #Fair/Light

a look: vamp it up.

Okay so we all know I love anything vampy. I mean pretty much damn near anything. Brick and oxblood reds are truly my favorite colors on the planet besides black (which I will only stop wearing once someone invents something darker). This look I decided to feature because I actually wore it out the other night and received so many compliments. If you are intrigued by vampy looks when you see them in magazines but you are terrified of red tones, don't be! Today's look shows you how to turn vampy into totally wearable for a night out. As always, try to achieve this looks with products already in your collection. Enjoy!

the eyes:

-As per usual, prime your entire lid space with a eyeshadow primer. (Lorac Behind the Scenes Eye Primer)
-Next, sweep a medium matte brown through the crease as the transition shade. This will help the other shadows blend more easily later on. (Lorac Unzipped Palette #Unconditional)
-With a flat shadow brush, pack a cranberry or brick red shade all over your lid. Then blend out the crease once more with no additional product on a fluffy blending brush. (Lorac Unzipped Palette #Unbridled)
-Highlight the brow bone as usual with a matte shadow a few shades lighter than your skin tone. (NYX Nude Matte Shadow #IHaveAHeadache)
-Create a winged liner with a black gel or liquid liner. (Maybelline Eyestudio Gel Liner #BlackestBlack)
-Next, line the water line with a brown waterproof liner. (Jordana 12hr Made to Last Liquid Eyeliner #Espresso Last)
-Using a flat definer brush, sweep the brick red shadow along the outer 2/3 of the lower lash line. (Lorac Unzipped Palette #Unbridled)
-I chose to apply very lite lashes with this look and blended them in with a lite coat of mascara on the top lashes only. (Ardell Naturalites #21 & Lancome Hypnose Star Mascara #Noir Midnight)

the lips:

-Make sure to first line your lips with a deep red liner to insure your lipstick will last girl! (Jordana Easyliner for Lips #PlushPlum)
-Then apply a beautiful brick red lipstick. (L'oreal Color Riche LeMatte #Matte-r-of Fact)
-Lastly, clean up any edges with a concealer brush and a tiny bit of concealer. (Revlon Colorstay Concealer #Fair)

other products used:
-Rimmel Fix & Perfect Pro Primer
-Becca Radiant Skin Foundation #Porcelain
-Revlon Colorstay Concealer #Fair
-Nars Light Reflecting Setting Powder #Translucent Crystal
-NYX Nude Matte Shadow #Tryst (as contour powder)
-Physician's Formula Bronze Booster #Light/Medium
-Benefit Box Powder Blush #Rockateur
-Nars Powder Blush #Albatross
-Prestige Brow Perfection Brow Pencil #Med/Deep
-Milani Brow Fix Kit #Light

Alright, so that's it ya'll! Hope you enjoyed, and are not afraid to embrace the dark side. Even if its only for one night. As always please tweet me pics of your recreations or send them to many on any of my other social media (always listed to the top left of the screen). Don't forget to hashtag #iamalizarin so I can see! Muah!

need it: 2013 favorite products.

Alright, here it is. Today I am sharing my favorite products of 2013, why you want them, how much they cost, and where you can buy them. A few disclaimers before we begin:

1. I have oily acne prone skin.
2. I am very fair complected.
3. These are MY favorite things. What works for me may or may not work for you.

Well lets get to it!

makeup:

- Korres Mattifying Primer: keeps my face matte for hours with out leaving it irritated, also prolongs the wear of my foundation. I do not recommend this product for anyone with dry-normal skin type. Also the primer is skin color when you dispense it from the tube, but once applied to the face it blends seamlessly with no color.
$33 dollars at Sephora

- L'oreal Truematch Concealer Crayon (I am shade n-1-2-3): I love to keep this in my purse to touch up whenever I have a blemish or loose coverage near the end of the day like around my nose and chin. It blends beautifully with just your finger and does not require a setting powder, even with my oily skin. Both of these points make it the perfect purse staple. This concealer is very opaque and pigmented, offering full coverage. I do not recommend this for under the eyes, as I find it creases and can be a bit to heavy.
$8 at any drugstore

- Benefit Rockateur Box Powder Blush: I never though I could love a blush this much. It can look very scary in the pan as it has a shimmery over-spray when you first open it. However, this does not show up on the skin and wears away after the first few uses. This is the most natural flush color. It goes with literally any look and is great for fair-med skin tones. Oh, and like all Benefit products it smells amazing!
$28 at Sephora or Ulta

- MAC Mineralized Skin Finish in Lightscapade: The perfect neutral, everyday powder highlight for fair-medium skin tones. It is incredibly finely milled and gives a natural looking glow to the skin. I use this everyday on the high points of my face. This is a baked product, so it will last you ages.
$30 at MAC

- Prestige Longterm Relationship Eyeshadows: These are by far the best drugstore eyeshadows I have found. They are so pigmented and creamy. These can also be used wet or dry and the shades available are stunning!
$9 at Ulta

- Lorac Pro Palette: In my opinion this should be everyone's must have palette. I have loved mine almost to death and when it dies I will be repurchasing. This offers a wide range of both matte and shimmer colors. Most shades are very neutral and perfect for every day. All the shadows are pigmented and so creamy. I have zero complaints here.
$42 at Sephora or Ulta

- Lorac Pro Mascara: My holy grail mascara! It is a little to wet when brand new for my liking but after the first week of use it transforms into the most amazing mascara I have ever tried. Usually I have to use both a lengthening and a volumizing mascara, but this does it all in one product. It only comes in black and there is no waterproof version.
$23 at Sephora or Ulta

- Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm: This is so amazing. I love all the colors I own. But most impressive is the formula. These are highly pigmented and truly balmy. Gone are the days of chapped lips from wearing matte lipsticks all night. The shade pictured above, Standout, is possibly the most beautiful and universal red I have ever seen. You MUST try it.
$9 at Ulta or any Drugstore

- Maybelline Color Elixirs: My new lipgloss obsession. Most of the time I wear a lipstick under my lipgloss, but I love the look of these so much on their own that I wear them solo! The shade range is impeccable. The are not sticky at all, but balmy feeling.
$7 at any Drugstore

skincare:

- Koh Gen Do Cleansing Spa Water: I prefer cleansing waters (micellar waters) to remove my makeup because I find they do not irritate my skin and are rinse free. This particular one has no scent, and removes every bit of both my eye makeup and face makeup with ease. It literally feels like water on your face and its an absolute essential in my routine.
$13 (for size above) at Sephora

- Queen Helene Mint Julep Mask: This mask is no joke. Just 15 min and it will literally suck everything out of your pores. However I do not recommend this for anyone with dry skin. I have also noticed that using this on a regular basis (2-3 per week) has really lowered my skins oil production. This mask also functions great as a overnight spot treatment, just be sure not to put it on any broken skin.
$4 at any Drugstore

- Mario Badescu Facial Spray w/ Aloe, Herbs and Rosewater: I use this after cleansing my face everyday as my toner. It is alcohol free which I love and truly helps hydrate my skin and balance its ph level. The spray nozzle packaging also makes it very convenient.
$7 at Ulta

- Sephora Acne-fighting Mattifying Moisturizer: This moisturizer is perfect for anyone with oily and acne prone skin. The 2% salicylic acid helps fight off breakouts and the mattifying properties fight oil. I use this religiously every day and always pair it with my Korres Mattifying Primer to insure my makeup stays shine free for as long as possible.
$18 at Sephora

hair:

- Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo: This is the best clarifying shampoo I have found. Nothing else leaves my hair feeling as squeaky clean. However, I always use this in conjunction with a deep repair mask and I limit it to once a week. I highly suggest you do the same because it is very drying. That being said, it gets rid of every styling product residue and dry shampoo in my hair.
$6 at any Drugstore

- Batiste Dry Shampoo (deep/dark brown): This is my holy grail dry shampoo. It not only smells amazing, but it really soaks up all the oils in my roots allowing me to go 2-3 days in between shampoos. This version above is for brunettes (they have other versions), so it is tinted brown. This is so nice because nothing is worse than having white residue left in your brown hair from dry shampoo. Not cute.
$7 at any Drugstore or Ulta

- Macadamia Healing Oil Treatment: The smell of this first of all is completely to die for. When this is in my hair I look like a freak because I cannot stop smelling my own hair every 5 sec. No Shame. This stuff makes me feel like a princess. It is luxurious and rich, so hydrating for your hair. I appy this all through my ends to keep them hydrated and add lots of shine.
$13.50 (size above) at Ulta or Sephora

Well that's it guys! Please let me know what your favorite products this year have been in the comment section below! As always thank you for your support and I will be back with another look soon!
